Question Answer Systems

Question Answer systems, also known as chatterbots, are a type of Natural Language Dialog System (NLDS) that can interact naturally with humans and carry on conversations. While these types of systems have evolved over the years, much research has been spent in trying to 1. acquire relevant knowledge, 2. deliver that same knowledge to the user and 3. make predictions as to how the user will respond. Dr. Schumaker's work focused on the acquisition part of the problem, by using web information sources to impart definitional knowledge into these chatterbot entities and then study how human participants judge the relevance and acceptability of that knowledge. From this research he found that narrowly scoped knowledge, that is knowledge within a certain domain, was found to be more satisfying to human participants than broad areas of conversation.
